Interview: Vault of Eagles

Vault of EaglesWe caught up with Mari and Hetty from local alt-rock trio Vault of Eagles ahead of their much anticipated show at The Sunflower Lounge this Saturday 12th December. Read more below…

Can you tell us more about yourselves and how the band got together?

We formed the band in 2011, although we’d had the concept of VoE for a while before. Being sisters growing up and being into the same bands it was a natural progression from there really. We’ve always done things ourselves, making the merch, being as DIY as possible, the thing that drives us most is being as thoroughly involved in everything we do. We just needed to find a drummer as passionate as us to get things rolling!

Who are your biggest musical influences and why?

When we were little we listened to a lot of our parents vinyl collection like Lou Reed, Bowie, Sabbath, Zep, a lot of early Blues, psychedelic and prog bands like 13th Floor Elevators, King Crimson, Captain Beefheart. Later we really got into punk, with The Clash, Patti Smith, Ramones, the list could just keep going! Then when we started making music ourselves and getting into bands like QOTSA, White Stripes and Jack White’s various projects. There are so many great bands around now making incredible music too – Metz are our current favourites, Cult Of Luna, Marriages and Emma Ruth Rundle were so good at ArcTanGent Festival this year…

What inspires you to write and create music?

It could be anything, if we feel something strongly it usually comes out in one form or another with our music! There aren’t any rules really for us!

Can you tell us more about the other bands joining you on the tour?

Soeur are a brand new Bristol-based band, but formed from members of two Worcester groups we’ve played a lot with over the past 3 years (Mansize and This Wicked Tongue) and have become great friends, being very like-minded. They play catchy grunge-pop with a lot of playing around with rhythms and timings, we can’t wait to see them as this will be their live debut! Downard are a loud slamming , math rock two-piece from Bristol, we saw them at ArcTanGent too and loved them. Theo just has to be experienced live, he’s from London and is phenomenal at using loops and creating layers of intricate guitar work over unpredictable beats of pure beauty.

Eagle-eyes fans will notice that you have had a line up change, with drummer Scott leaving the band. Can you introduce us to the newest member?

We have had a recent line-up change, we are very excited to have James Collins from Maybeshewill joining us for this tour.

Are there any local artists that you recommend we listen to?

Most of the local bands we love are playing on this tour! We all love each other’s music, which is why we have been working together on this set of shows. We played with a few good bands last month, Mutt from Birmingham, and Hey Colossus from London. Also Hungry Ghosts from Birmingham.

What’s next for you guys in the new year?

We have been working writing a lot of new music, and plan to do as many gigs and festivals as we can! Recording and touring is definitely on the agenda too and we eventually want to put an album together.

And finally, what can people expect from your show at The Sunflower Lounge Birmingham on Saturday 12th December?

For fans who are familiar with our music there will be a few more changes and reworkings, we like keeping things in a process of continual evolvement, there is no stasis. Also having Jim drumming will add a new dimension to our live show, we have had some really inspiring jams and rehearsals and can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on!
