Joseph Hicklin is a singer/songwriter from The Black Country who performs under the moniker “DEATH BY STAMPEDE“. He writes about love and labour, losing hope, regaining hope and his experience of the people and the country around him. His simple style of ‘one-man-and-his-guitar’ highlights the lyrical content of his music and is a subtle accompaniment to his powerful singing voice. Yet when playing with a band, the power and grit of the drums, bass and electric guitar give the music a whole different dimension.
“Brilliant singer songwriter – in the best tradition of Dylan. Feisty, tuneful, passionate. I love his work…” Adrian Goldberg BBC WM
“Wraps you up in his multi faceted and authentic inky depths, leaving you dishevelled and haunted in the most disarming of ways. This man is not to be missed or messed with. The climatic urgency of his vocals nail you to the crosses you thought you’d long left behind. Spellbinding, anchoring, bewitching, an example of love at first note.” Treehouse Sessions, Birmingham
“You can hear Devendra Banhart in his vibrato, but vocally he comes closer to the tone and high-reaching power of Jeff Buckley […] A whole host of ghosts hang on each breath he takes. There are earthy reminders of Josh Ritter and Kristian Mattson in his songwriting, which when looked at further hint at the depravity of Bukowski and occasionally the old-time romanticism of Waits […] After being stalked by demons, shedding his skin and exposing his skeletons he accepts this inescapable adversity as commonplace and puts everything into perspective” David Weir, Folk Radio
