“Ginger Snaps dwells in slacker climes, matching fuzzed up riffs against boom-bap hip-hop beats. Re-calls everyone from Beck to De La Soul, but really it could only come from the mind of a certain Northampton dweller” – CLASH
Welcome to the brain of Jay Brook. Producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and mad band leader from Northampton.
After cutting his teeth as one of the main writers in Radio X Favourite’s OhBoy!, Jay spent time in his Northampton Lab cooking up something different.
Continuing his flair for off kilter indie pop, Ginger Snaps is british elmagamation of sounds inspired by a brain racked by Beastie Boys, Beck & De La Soul.
A sounds drenched in baggy instrumentation and colourful effects, made pristine through Jay’s self-aware social commentary and raspy delivery. His writing often focusing on the tetchy and uncompromising romance of shared insecurities.
Co-produced with Dan Gatreau, horns and brass are woven with scratching from DJ and collaborator J Science. Add drums, guitar and bass, and all that was missing was the soulful backing vocals to form the live show. Knocking off the edges playing at Live at Leeds, The Great Escape and Reading and Leeds, a reputation for festivals is beginning to form.
Throughout the succession of singles released so far, the ambition and scale of Ginger Snaps has grown in parallel with the reception from UK tastemakers and live fans.
Support from radio comes at nearly every corner, as well as being noticed by Clash, DIY & Dork across last year.
With an EP due early 2018 & a spring tour to play it out loudly, it’s an exciting time to be as off kilter as Ginger Snaps.
